Where the numbers come from
My Runway applies the rules the ATO, Services Australia and the state revenue offices publish: income tax and the Medicare levy, the Medicare levy surcharge, HELP repayments, super caps and preservation age, the transfer balance cap and minimum pension drawdowns, capital gains tax with the changes from 1 July 2027 (the split at 30 June 2027, indexation and the 30% minimum tax), the rental loss quarantine on homes bought from 13 May 2026 that are not newly built, tax offsets, franking credits, stamp duty with first home buyer relief and land tax by state, and the Age Pension with its income and assets tests. Each rate comes from its official source, is dated, and is updated when it changes, usually each July. How we check our figures says what each is tested against.
Stamp duty is estimated from the state’s scale until it is calculated exactly (Plus). Mortgage insurance and purchase fees aren’t published by any government, so they are estimates from typical figures, and yours to change.
Dividends from a shares account or a managed fund, and an asset’s dividends, can be franked. The company tax already paid on the franked part, at the 30% rate, is added to taxable income and taken off the tax, and what is left over is refunded: an opened year shows Franking credits in both places, and Tax refunded when the credits take the tax below nil. A shares account or fund starts at 70% franked and an asset’s dividends at none; Franked share in its details sets it. The 25% rate some smaller companies pay, and the 45-day holding rule, aren’t modelled.
Years past the last published rates carry the latest table forward, with thresholds the law indexes grown each year, and an opened year says so under its tax.
Assumptions
Growth, returns and inflation can’t be looked up; they are assumptions. My Runway starts from sensible defaults, shows them, and lets you change every one. Inflation also stands in for the CPI that indexes a capital gain from July 2027, since the CPI isn’t known years ahead. The projection is only as good as the figures and assumptions in it, so check them.
My Runway works in financial years (1 July to 30 June), and counts everyone’s birthday as 1 January of the year they were born.
My Runway is for Australian households: every plan follows Australian rules and is in Australian dollars.
